A Taste of Milky Chance – The German Duo’s First Time in Asia

With over 2.8 billion streams and 18 million listeners on Spotify, Milky Chance has been in the music industry for 13 years. Recently, the duo was in Singapore for the Formula 1 weekend. The Fifth Parlour had the opportunity to attend an exclusive private in-store session following their Singapore Grand Prix F1 debut and had a quick chat with the duo.

Meet Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch. Hailed from Germany, the high school friends have known each for 14 years. Now, in their 30s, this is their first time in Asia and performing in Singapore.

During my research of the duo, I discovered that their band name, Milky Chance, was just a random name they picked because it was a necessity to have a name at that time. Was there something to prompt them to choose milk instead of other things?

The duo shared that there was not much thought process and the word milk was available and that was how the band’s name was derived. However, during the private in-store session at Swee Lee Clarke Quay, Dausch shared that they used to have milkshakes when he was over at Rehbein’ house. So that might have contributed to band’s name. A beverage that bonds the brothers together!

A bond that transcends over adulthood – the duo clicked on their first day of high school. During their music class, they discovered that they love music and play instruments and the rest is history.

Despite being in the industry for 13 years, one thing for sure is that their passion for making music is still strong. “What hasn’t changed is that we love it and enjoy it. It’s something we want to do,” shared Dausch. He further added that now, musicians play more than one role, as collaborators, songwriters, producers and more while creating the art.

So, is there a new album or song coming our way soon?

Currently, they are still in the process of gathering ideas, figuring the direction they would like to take and taking it one step at a time. But one thing for sure is that there are plans for new materials.

Besides their love for music, they enjoy food! Before their show at Swee Lee, they made a quick pit stop at Newton Food Centre and tried Satay, Shrimps, Nai bai (milk cabbage), Otak-Otak and coconut water. Rehbin enjoyed the peanut sauce that is paired with Satay and shared that they poured the sauce all over the Satay. That is the right way to enjoy the Satay, the more sauce the better. What a foodie! Since they are foodies, I then asked what is the best way to describe the band in terms of food?

“It would be butter. Butter is worldly, I feel. Everybody knows butter, right? Butter goes with everything. Everything is better with butter. It adds a lot of taste,” explained Dausch. When being prompted further if they prefer salted or unsalted, both exclaimed “salted!”

Salted butter is what we can expect from this duo. Are their music as smooth as butter? You be the judge. Check them out on their social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

The Fifth Parlour would like to thank Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch from Milky Chance for the interview and Lucious from Copacetic PR for coordinating the interview.
