The Parting Gift, A Musical Project by Ralph Brown & Jake Kershaw

We all have been in a grieving process. No matter how much we try to run away from it, it will always hit you back. Different people deal with loss differently. It can be fatal without emotional support from family and close friends.

Contrary to that, others pen out their feelings to relieve themselves from the pain. That was exactly what Melbourne based singer, Ralph Brown did when he started the project, Without Belief with his good friend, Jake Kershaw from the band, Earthbound. Brown developed those raw emotions and thoughts of the grief process as he wrote his debut EP, The Parting Gift.

Without Belief  was written by Brown when both Kershaw and himself loss their loved ones. The songwriting journey was meaningful for both as they completed The Parting Gift with five amazing tracks with the support of their musician friends such as Lizi Blanco from The Beautiful Monument, Mitchell Rawlings from Above The Fallen, Tom Armstrong from Earthbound and David De La Hoz from Belle Haven.

The following are tracklist of The Parting Gift:

  1. Intro
  2. Denial
  3. Anger
  4. Bargaining
  5. Depression
  6. Acceptance

Every song highlights the journey they go through at every stage of the grief process. Allow me to share with you a few of my favourite tracks from the meaningful album.

Firstly, Denial starts at a fast pace. Then, it mellows down as Blanco sings, highlighting the meaning of the song. If you are a big fan of Make Them Suffer, then this song is for you!

Next, with the help from Rawlings, Anger is the hardest hitting song from the album. I love this track very much because of the title itself. You will be able to hear their raw emotions in this track. Both Brown and Rawlings showcased their screams in this song which really goes well together.

Lastly, Depression hit me hard because of the facets of daily lives that accumulates in our life no matter how big or small. The emotional connection I had was when Hoz starts singing the lyrics “Darling, I think he is dying”. Tears welled up in my eyes as it brings back the grief process during the passing of my grandmother. Depression hit me right after since she was the only one that I look forward to every time I visited her. Hence, this song has an incredibly soft spot in my heart.
