Film Review: Weathering With You

Weathering with You is a Japanese animated feature film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The romance-fantasy drama film is the second film after its initial film in 2016, Your Name. Due to its popularity in Asia and Japan, Weathering With You has been selected as the country’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2020 Oscars. Last Friday, The Fifth Parlour was at the Capitol Theatre for its local premiere organised by Encore Films.

Hodaka Morishima is an underaged runaway student who tried to make a living in Tokyo. He finally found a job at a local magazine reporting on supernatural scenarios in Tokyo. There has been a series of strange weather citing such as the heavy rains which has caused inevitable problems to the people. Morishima then befriended Hina Amano and discovered that Amano is able to control the weather!

Shinkai’s portrayal of the weather is unique. There seems to be a constant reminder to all of us on the importance of environmental stability and the impact of it in the future. Fixating on the impact of climate change, the animation film also depicts the real-life situation of Tokyo as one of the expensive cities in the world. I really admire Morishima’s curiousity and innovative nature. He solved problems using the minimal resources at hand, just like the saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
