Fast forward to nine months: Baek Kitae (Hyun Bin) has stepped up as the Acting Director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). Driven by unbridled ambition, Kitae walked a dangerous path, strategically building his power while running a shady cross-border enterprise between Korea and Japan in the 1970s.

For Season two, you can expect the cutthroat power struggle between the KCIA and the Joint Investigation Headquarters. Jang Geonyoung (Jung Woosung) made an unexpected comeback as a special advisor, driven by vengeance, convincing himself that it is all in the name of justice. His surprise return in episode two completely threw me off guard in the best way.

The unintentional rivalry between the Baek brothers is another key subplot as both agencies operate in the shadows. Director Woo Minho highlighted this dynamic as a focal point of the season. Lieutenant Colonel Baek Kihyun (Woo Dohwan) was caught in a tough spot, torn between loyalty to his brother, Kitae, and his duty as a soldier working alongside Geonyoung. It is a conflict that could easily shift the whole game.

Director Woo shared that the series focused on fictional characters experiencing the events that led to a tumultuous era in modern Korean history. Jung built on that, contrasting the show with his hit action-thriller 12.12: The Day. He noted that while the film centered on the 1979 military coup following the president’s assassination, season two is more about the human choices made during that period.

The first season is one of the most-watched global Korean originals on Disney+ in 2025. It has earned Hyun Bin the Best Actor at the Baeksang Awards. Season two promises to take things up a notch. You can expect to see how the director balanced brilliantly the cast as the tensions and ambitions escalate. As Director Woo put it, “it is as if they are wearing a personally tailored suit – that is how incredible the cast is.”
