If you are a movie buff then you are in for a treat! The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is back with its 33rd edition with 101 independent films from 55 countries.
This year, it aims to feature fresh and inclusive perspectives to showcase human connectedness and function as a vehicle of progress. Good news for those who support locally made films as it accounts for over a quarter of the year’s line-up. Look out for films from the Singapore Panorama and the Southeast Asia Short Film Competition section and more!
Opening this year’s Festival is Assault, a darkly comic, absorbing thriller that depicts the farce and fault lines in a society ruled by the insecurities of men. Directed by Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov, the film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. It is also SGIFF’s first-ever opening film from Central Asia.
On top of the film screenings, join the forum entitled, Mildly Offensive, Sometimes Accurate hosted by Hossan Leong at the LASALLE College of the Arts as local film practitioners including actors, directors and casting directors shed light on stories you might not be aware of in the industry, in a different way.
