Malaysian R&B singer NYK is not an unfamiliar face in the entertainment industry. His breakthrough performance was being an opening act for the Sam Willows and James Arthur, encompassing the Sony Music family. He was recently in town and the team got to catch up with the man himself to talk about his latest single, Make It on Me.
The 24-year-old who has now successfully attained his master’s degree from Melbourne is ever-ready for the entertainment limelight. He enjoys writing lyrics and creating music during his free time. Storytelling is a big deal for NYK as he preference for novels, manga and comics as well as Playstation4 games with the similar element. He further explained that his soon to be released EP is an audio-digital story book consisting of singles that are interconnected in a chronological order.
Make It on Me is a prequel to FWB, and depicts a guy’s feeling of excitement after meeting a girl at a club. At the same time, ironically, he feels less interested with the lifestyle of the night life. NYK collaborated with Airliftz, a fellow Malaysian rapper who he considers to be a close friend. It took Airliftz only 2 days to create a rap verse for the track while he took only 45 minutes to finalise the lyrics!
NYK is feeling optimistic and grateful for the success he has expereienced so far in his music career. Pretty Burn, which he performed during Music Matters this year, will be his next track to look out for! The next chapter of his book is still in the process of conceptualization and the next music video is being planned to be shot in various cities in Japan such as Kyoto, Nara and Osaka! Japan, as NYK confesses, is must-go destination for him.
While we await the release of NYK’s EP in June, do have a listen to Make It on Me now out on Spotify and all streaming platforms now!
The Fifth Parlour would like to thank Sony Music for coordinating the interview and NYK for his time to speak with us.
