In preparation for the biggest K-Pop World Festival in Changwon city this September, SGKpopCon held the final for both dance and singing competition to select the winner to represent Singapore. SGKpopCon is an annual celebration of the Korean cultural scene in Singapore, specifically K-Pop! lovers.
Sinec 2015, SGKpopCon has attracted thousands of participants. This year, seven performance groups and five vocal groups were shortlisted for the final judging round. The event was organised jointly with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and The Shilla Duty Free. As such, winners were awarded with The Shilla shopping vouchers of up to $1000 and most importantly, the honourable title of representing Singapore in K-Pop World Festival 2016.
Competition was tough as performance groups engaged in fierce dance battles, covering K-Pop dances like Volume Up by 4-Minute, Fly by GOT7 and even the recent release, Fire by BTS. On the other hand, vocalists chose soothing pieces like Come Back Home from 2NE1, I Need A Girl by TaeYang and the ever-popular Descendant of the Sun’s soundtrack, This Love by Davichi.
The evening was definitely a spectacular showcase of talents and teamwork. In addition, one can infer how much Singaporeans love Korean culture by their deafening screams for every K-pop songs that was played.
Apart from performances displayed by the finalists, the event was graced with guest performers Kwak Pureun Haneul 곽푸른하늘 and Nol-i. Nicknamed “Hongdae IU”, it was Kwak Pureun Haneul’s first time in Singapore. She sang her own compositions such as I Need You 나는니가필요해 and 이래도좋아 저래도좋아.
Up next was the partnership between Masters of Ildo Taekwondo and Starreseconds, winner of SGKpopCon 2015 Best Cover Dance to showcase the beauty of martial arts integrated into K-pop music. Fly by GOT7 and Fire by BTS were probably the two most popular songs this year.
Eventually, the judges reached a final decision to select Singapore’s representatives for the K-Pop World Festival. Congratulations SSENZE and Marcella for obtaining Top Performance and Top Vocals respectively! They will be flying to Korea in September and be part of the K-pop extravaganza. For the other participants, fret not as your K-pop journey does not end here.
