Singapore’s 3rd stint hosting the 15th Global Chinese Music Awards 2015  

Friday, 6 November 2015, was a night of glitz and glamour as artistes from all over the region converged together at the Suntec Convention Centre for the 15th Global Chinese Music Awards 2015.

Previously held back in 2006 and 2012, the event returns for the 3rd time in Singapore, delighting the crowd of 5000 fans present at the event as the singers got them intoxicated and dancing along to the most popular hits of the year. Organised by seven regional radio stations: Radio Beijing, Radio Guangdong, Radio Television Hong Kong, Shanghai East Radio, Taiwan Pop Radio, Malaysia Star Radio and Singapore’s YES 933, with YES 933 taking the lead as the main MCs of the day in commemoration of the radio station’s 25th Anniversary as well as the city state’s jubilee year. Over 20 groups of artistes representing seven different countries from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong were in attendance for awards show.

Popular Taiwanese band Magic Power kicked off the event with crowd mesmerizing LED lit dance suits and heart-thumping music, singing their top hit songs I Still Love You/ 我还是爱着你 and Fighting For Love/ 战神.

The Most Popular Male Artiste and Female Artiste Award for the night went to Kenji Wu and Jolin Tsai whose respective songs 你是我的星球/You Are My Jupiter and 电话皇后/Phony Queen were also among the list of Top Twenty Hits. Kenji Wu was also the biggest winner for the Taiwan contingent with a total of four awards, including Best Album Producer.

Local artiste Olivia Ong, well known for her song 如燕/Like A Swallow in the 2008 hit local drama Little Nyonya won the Outstanding Regional Artiste Award for Singapore. To which, Global Chinese Music Awards ambassadors Derrick Hoh and Kelly Poon also made an appearance singing a medley of classic hits by local musicians who have contributed greatly to the Mandopop industry.

Princess of Music, Malaysia-born Shila Amzah who made her way into the Mandopop circle and the hearts of Mandopop fans after winning the Asian Wave  and second runner-up of I Am A Singer (Season 2) won the Best Female Stage Performer Award. She is the first Malay singer to be invited to the awards ceremony and now, the first one to win an award!

The Most Popular Group Award went to Da Mouth who rocked the stage with retro-pop song Funky 那个女孩 /Let Dat Gal Go. Pop singer and actor Jason Zhang who was unmistakably one of the fan-favourites for the night and Cantopop songwriter Kay Tse received the Best Male and Female Artiste Award. Kay performed her hit Cantonese single Isolated Village/独家村 and latest Mandarin song Turn With Tears/跟着眼泪转弯 while Jason also went on to win the Most Popular Duet Award for the song 燕归巢/The Swallow Returns, a duet with Jane Zhang.

The awards show reached its highlight as Alex To received the Honorary Award from Mediacorp Deputy CEO Mr Chang Long Jong. After being crowned winner at the 4th annual New Talent Singing Awards in 1985, Alex has gone on to release many best-selling albums that had stood the test of time. The crowd got pumping as Alex then performed a 7-minute medley of his top hits including crowd’s favourite Take Off/脱掉.

Congratulations to all award winners and nominees for this year’s edition for the 15th Global Chinese Music Awards 2015. The show will telecast on MediaCorp’s Channel U on 14 November 2015 at 7pm. Hong Kong will be the host city for the next edition.
