The Bala Boys: Dropping Beats and Breaking Stigma

Earlier this year, the brothers were featured on Times Square’s digital billboards and introduced Indian classical music to the masses. What piqued our interest is that The Bala Boys uses music to incorporate mental health and wellness.

The Bala Boys consist of twin brothers, Sriram Bala and Ganesh Bala from Singapore. Their music caught the attention of Pandora and SiriusXM and they were invited to produce a special release for ‘World Mental Health Awareness Month’ and ‘World Meditation Day’. The collaboration proved to be a hit as the song managed to be Pandora’s top-streamed wellness release during the launch and had more than 400,000 streams in its first month. This has earned them a spot Times Square’s digital billboards.

Music has always been part of the twins, and it started at home. They had formal training in Indian Classical music from Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS) and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Berklee College of Music, Boston. With the knowledge gained overtime, it comes naturally for the twins to blend Indian classical music with the sounds they love.

The Bala Boys hopes that their music can help listeners to get through their difficult and trying times. “Whether you are restless, joyful, or searching, it can hold space,” explained Sriram. Ganesh added that one of their listeners shared that their music has been the anchor during one of their heavy anxiety. “That word stays with us. Anchor. We hope the music can be something steady to hold onto.”

So what is next for The Bala Boys?

Besides working on their first full-length album, they are open to collaboration and letting their music take the lead.

The Fifth Parlour would like to thank Sriram Bala and Ganesh Bala for taking time for the interview and Alpha Story for coordinating.
