Made in Korea: 3 Reasons to Watch the 1970s Noir Drama

A Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) agent by day and a notorious leader by night. Determined to reach the pinnacle of wealth and power, he led a double life. Things changed after he comes face-to-face with a tenacious prosecutor who wants to bring him down.

If the premise above caught your eye, you do not want to miss the six-part cinematic event Made in Korea, now streaming on Disney+. Originally a working title, writer Park Eun-kyo explained that the name eventually became permanent to honour the “realness” of the 1970s. It served as a powerful symbol of patriotism, evoking the era when those three iconic words were stamped onto every domestic product, signaling the country’s rising pride and identity.

Smart and suave, KCIA Chief Baek Kitae (Hyun Bin) built a sprawling smuggling empire to consolidate power, only to be hunted by Jang Geonyoung (Jung Woosung), a Busan prosecutor who cannot be bribed. Driven by childhood trauma and a refusal to play office politics, Geonyoung became Kitae’s greatest threat in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

Three reasons why you should watch this crime noir drama:

  • Cool mystery vibe: The story is told through the eyes of Prosecutor Geonyoung. It felt like he is reading his investigation journal out loud, giving it a really cool Sherlock Holmes mystery feel.
  • Amazing locations: Korea has changed so much that the production team chose to film in Kobe, Japan to get a real 1970s Busan look. These locations made the show feel like a big-budget movie and brought the old-school settings to life.
  • Top-tier team: Director Woo Min-ho (of Harbin) worked with famous actors like Hyun Bin and Jung Woo-sung again. The famous cast is great, but the best part is watching how their characters change and grow in every episode.
