When we heard Mediacorp Suria infotainment show Manja was having an inaugural live recording session at Our Tampines Hub, we could not miss the chance to sit down with 987’s DJ and Manja host, Natasha Faisal.
In the fast-paced world of Singaporean media, few personalities bridge the gap between English radio and Malay television as seamlessly as Natasha Faisal. Known for her infectious energy and sharp wit, the 987 DJ and Manja host recently opened up about the “raw and spontaneous” nature of her career — all while navigating an exciting new chapter in her radio journey.
For Natasha, juggling a high-profile radio slot with the hosting duties of Manja, is not just a job; it is a lifestyle. When asked about her favorite part of the dual role, her answer is immediate: the energy. “I just love that I get to live in both worlds. With radio, straight up; that’s where my energy lies. It’s always fast-paced, it’s energetic. It’s momentum, it’s music. It’s everything that I love and real-time connection.”
That “real-time connection” is what defines her presence. Whether she is chatting with listeners over the airwaves or engaging with the community on Manja, Natasha thrives on the unpredictability of live broadcasting.
While many seek the comfort of scripted content, Natasha leans into the “raw and spontaneous.” She notes a surprising similarity between her work at the radio station and her work on television.
- Radio: A medium of pure spontaneity where every second counts.
- Manja: Despite being a TV production, Natasha highlights that the show maintains a “live situation” feel, particularly during its Monday segments.
This ability to stay present and authentic has made her a household name, earning her nominations and recognition at events like Pesta Perdana, where she has been celebrated for her contributions to Malay infotainment.
The buzz surrounding Natasha is not just about her television presence. Fans of 987, Singapore’s number one hit music station, have followed her through a significant transition as she moved into a new time slot.
Transitioning time slots in radio is a major milestone. It means reaching a new demographic of listeners and reshaping the “vibe” of a different part of the day. For Natasha, this move represents a fresh opportunity to bring her signature “momentum and music” to a different set of commuters and fans, proving that her versatility is her greatest strength.
Moving to a later time slot also means adjusting and navigating new norms with her spouse and kids’ schedule. All in good time as Natasha finds herself enjoying the slow mornings and to just take things slower as compared to before.
When asked what advice would she share with the youths of today wanting to pursue a career in media, Natasha shared that they should keep at it, be a sponge, and find their literal and figurative voice. Stay authentic and do not be afraid to make mistakes. It is of utmost importance to remain relevant hence to also remain curious; learning and discovering new things.
The Fifth Parlour would like to thank Mediacorp and Natasha Faisal for carving out time for us to make this interview happen.
