From Drama to Deep Dive: Ji Hyo Swims with Legends

Ever heard of the haenyeo from South Korea’s Jeju Island? Haenyeo are known for their resilience, determination and good hearts. These remarkable women are also known as ‘the women of the sea.’

This heartfelt documentary marks the very first original co-production between BBC Studios Asia and South Korea’s JTBC. Spanning over three visually stunning episodes, Song Ji Hyo takes on the biggest challenge of her life, free diving with the legendary haenyeo. With every plunge beneath the waves, Ji Hyo found herself forming a deep, personal bond with these extraordinary women of the sea.

The haenyeo tradition is a treasured part of Korean heritage, passed down through generations for over 400 years. Every day, these remarkable women, some well into their 80s, braved the ocean’s depths, free-diving up to 20 metres without air tanks or modern gear. With nothing but grit and breath, they collect shellfish to support their families and keep their centuries old way of life alive.

Throughout this one-of-a-kind adventure, Ji Hyo pushes herself to the limit, battling hypothermia, nosebleeds, and the harsh demands of the sea. Her determination is fueled by deep personal roots. Her mother was a former swimming athlete and her aunt is a haenyeo. Inspired by the strength and grace of the women in her family, Ji Hyo dived headfirst both literally and emotionally into this journey.

With just one month of intensive training on Jeju Island, Ji Hyo fully immersed herself in the techniques and the sisterhood of the haenyeo. She formed genuine bonds with these extraordinary women, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into their world, culture, and centuries-old wisdom. To truly connect, Ji Hyo even learnt the Jeju dialect; overcoming yet another challenge to speak heart-to-heart with the women who have spent a lifetime mastering the sea.

While many may have first encountered the haenyeo through popular dramas like Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023), this documentary offers a truly refreshing, firsthand perspective into the lives of these women to reveal why even simple tools like the taewak (buoy) are so essential. In one especially moving moment, she joined a local choir to sing during the retirement ceremony of a senior haenyeo. A heartfelt tribute that resonated deeply with the women and viewers.

Will Ji Hyo be able to learn the traits of the haenyeo and feel accepted by the Samchon (female elders) on Jeju Island?
