Voice of Baceprot are Breaking Stereotypes in Rock Music!

When you think of a girl rock band, you would imagine them decked into something edgy! Now, imagine a girl band wearing hijab and playing rock music. It is hard to imagine right? That is what makes Voice of Baceprot (VoB) stands out!

Hailing from Indonesia, VoB was formed in 2014 when the members were still in an Islamic junior high school. The trio consists of Firda Marsya Kurnia, Widi Rahmawati and Euis Siti Aisyah. The group made waves as their image does not fit the stereotype placed in ladies wearing the hijab. But this does not stop them from doing what they love, playing rock music. Despite the criticism faced, VoB moved forward as they believed that “stereotypes are unnecessary stigmas that often restrict freedom.”

So, what does their band’s name signify?

Based on the Sundanese’s language, Beceprot refers to noisy. Does that mean the name of the band is Voice of Noisy then?

“The word baceprot is often used as a derogatory term for those who are perceived as fussy or overly particular. For us, voicing concerns about inequality and injustice is a fundamental right of every independent individual that must not be taken away. We believe that baceprot reflects our critical reasoning,” explained the trio.

The trio has since used their voice to advocate for issues that are close to them. Their first single, School Revolution criticized the education system in Indonesia. Adding on, their song, Not Public Property, initiated a movement advocating for women’s rights. It is heartening to see the youths advocating for issues that are important to them!

Recently, the trio made history as the first-ever Indonesian artist to play at the Glastonbury Festival in June. By participating in the festival, the trio learnt how to better their performance by ensuring that it is engaging as well as effective without compromising their freedom of expression. With that, I am sure they did a good job performing at the recent Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on September 20.

With invites to play at festivals and other big stage, I am sure that we will be hearing more from them! This is just the beginning for them. Stay connected to the trio by following them on Instagram, Facebook and website.

The Fifth Parlour would like to thank Voice of Baceprot for the interview.
