The Tyrant: Intrigue, Espionage and Political Power in South Korea

The Tyrant is a four-part series Korean drama on Disney+ starring Jo Yoonsu, Kim Seonho, Kim Kangwoo and Cha Seoungwon. The drama is directed by Park Hoonjung who was responsible for the well-received film, The Witch series.

The series follows a group of scientists who are part of the government. They aimed to make Korea one of the highest power in the world. However, their plans were disrupted as the U.S. intelligence agency intervened. Different agendas are at stake in the science fiction espionage landscape with the development of a cutting-edge virus, The Tyrant Project.

If you watched Director Park Hoonjung’s The Witch from 2018, you would have noticed some similarities. Director Park described the story as similar in terms of its universe but with an entirely different plot. The Tyrant was initially planned as a film but was adapted into a series for Disney+ as he wanted to challenge his team by creating four endings in between episodes that resonated with the plots.

I honestly have not watched the sci-fi film but I felt that the storyline is well thought of. It was refreshing to watch Kim Seonho with a cocky attitude, a different persona as compared to his roles in romantic comedies such as Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha. Opposing him is Kim Kangwoo, a U.S. intelligence agent who was equally swift as he lead the team.

This is Jo Yoonsu’s first leading role as an assassin throwing her fierce punches against baddies such as prolific bounty hunter played by Cha Seoungwon. Hell breaks loose between both governments while egos and political agendas get blurry when respective black ops are activated to recover the virus.
