Who was Frida Kahlo?

One might ask, who was Frida Kahlo?

Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo became one of today’s most influential cultural icons representing resilience, diversity and self-empowerment. I had the chance to explore her life story through the exhibition, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon at the ArtScience Museum.

Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon is an immersive biographical exhibition charting the life of Frida Kahlo, one of the most influential women artists of the 20th century, widely recognised for her uncompromising and vibrant self-portraits.

At the exhibition, I learned more about the physical and mental hardships she endured. Kahlo’s life took a turn after she was in a bus accident which left her with a fractured spine, right leg, collarbone, pelvis, and right foot and internal injuries. She was bedridden for a month and then started doing paintings.

The exhibition is spread out into eight thematic spaces. You can explore Kahlo’s life story through photographs, films, digital art, interactive installations, 360-degree projections and creative visitor activation spaces. Pen down your thoughts on the paper flowers or ignite some creativity using colours and while you are at it, project them on the screen on your way out!

Enjoy the Virtual Reality (VR) experience located on level 4. Please note that you must purchase additional tickets to enjoy the VR experience as it runs at selected times. Personally, I feel you should opt for the VR experience to observe Kahlo’s life and watch out for references from her last painting, Viva la Vida (Long Live Life) which involves watermelons.

If you love parties, A Birthday Fiesta is a special night event organised by the ArtScience Museum to celebrate the life and legacy of Frida Kahlo through Mexican festivities on 6th July, which was Kahlo’s birthday. For information on tickets, head over to the website.
