Shakespeare Rewrites A Tragedy Play in its Musical Adaption in “& Juliet”

“Parting is such sweet sorrow,” said William Shakespeare in his infamous tragedy play – Romeo and Juliet. The Tony-nominated musical, & Juliet sums up the saying in it’s modern interpretation with twists and turns as The Fifth Parlour experienced them live!

The script of the greatest love story ever told, imagining what would have happened if Juliet had not ended it all for Romeo and got a second chance at life and love, on her terms. The musical storytelling journey burst through an addictive playlist of pop anthems by legendary scribe Max Martin and friends, including Since U Been Gone, Roar, Baby One More Time, Larger Than Life, That’s The Way It Is, Can’t Stop the Feeling, a brand new song written especially for the show by Martin. You could also have a preview of the music performed from their official Spotify playlist.

& Juliet relates to Juliet’s journey of self-discovery set in olden times with issues of current times as she finds true love. Her shortcomings may be relevant to today’s context as themes such as a woman’s right to be single, empowered to do what she desires and earn those choices for her own future.

The story was narrated and foretold by playwriters, William Shakespeare (Rob Mills) and his wife, Anne Hathaway (Amy Lehpamer) supported by modern dance numbers. They are also my favourite characters as they unintentionally and intentionally define the formula of Shakespearean tragedy plays humorously. My favourite scene would be the tear-jerking scene between the two. The relationship between the husband who is also a playwright and the wife, in my opinion, serves as the “conflict” in its theatrical term. Both storytellers continuously rewrite the narrative of Juliet’s life, as the story progresses through the musical. The conflicting ideas affect Juliet’s character as an empowered woman, which later mirrors Anne’s sentiment as a woman in Shakespeare’s life.

It will be a grave crime to miss this extravagant, witty drama musical set in medieval modern times. The set designs are fully furnished with colourful lights, and showgirl vibes enriched with confetti accompanied by popular music from the past 30 years performed in a theatrical manner. The night scenes were a little dreamy with a moon shine-covered with shooting stars coming to life with ambient lighting bouncing across the dimmed stage.

The original creative team behind the musical extravaganza includes David West Read (book), Max Martin & Friends (music & lyrics), Luke Sheppard (direction), Jennifer Weber (choreography), Bill Sherman (musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements), Soutra Gilmour (scenic design), Paloma Young (costume design), Howard Hudson (lighting design), Gareth Owen (sound design) and Andrzej Goulding (video & projection design).
