A thrilling Korean blockbuster with the largest budget to date has garnered over four million admissions in Korea alone! Ashfall 백두산 portrays the effects of the devastation from the eruption of Baekdu Mountain within the Korean peninsula.
President secretary Jeon Yoo-kyung (Jeon Hye-Jin) and Professor Kang Bong-rae (Ma Dong-seok) were tasked to study Baekdu Mountain and its possible eruptions in the years to come. The duo came up with an operation plan to overcome future eruptions by installing 600 kiloton nuclear explosives beneath that mountain.
Captain Jo In-chang (Ha Jeong-woo) is a South Korean Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician. He was about to be discharged from his service as he welcomes his newborn with his wife, Ji-young (Suzy Bae). During a final mission, an airdrop into North Korea went wrong leaving his team as the only survivors to complete the mission.
Captain Jo and his team have to search and rescue a North Korean agent named Ri Joon-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun). He was aware of the location of the nuclear explosives and help the taskforce to navigate towards Baekdu Mountain.
Squabbles and head butting behaviours between Captain Jo and Ri Joon-pyeong until the very end earned many waves of laughter from the audience!
Ashfall is not just any South Korean blockbuster movie with many notable Korean actors and actresses. It entertains but most importantly shows the possibility of a Korean reunification in the future despite its difficulties.
